So I'm stopped at a highway road works project and suddenly I get the idea - hey what if we had Unicode license plates. Wouldn't that be cool? And why did I suddenly think of this?

I think Australia has gone to bed, so you'll have to wait for the answer.

It's an inside joke for tech nerds. I'll give you a hint: International Domain Names use Unicode characters. There's an encoding standard called 'punycode' which converts these to US-ASCII (7-bit) text because URLs are limited to 7-bit US-ASCII. A Unicode name which has been converted to 7-bit US-ASCII always starts with the prefix 'xn--'

And toll cameras and speed cameras wouldn't understand it.
